core1991 - I think that these lines are only interpreted as ambiguous in the english language version.
I have watched it in Japanese, Chinese (subtitled), and German (w/ a German friend), and the lines are given as romantic love in those versions. The words for romantic love, not friendship love, are used.
But I agree that multiple possibilities can produce a wider range of stories, which is great.
