Well, she said she went to high school like a normal student, and lived like a normal girl until she was abducted, so I think it's safe to assume that the girl grew up in a seemingly regular, relatively modern day human society. If anything, judging by how Zinovy started his story about his acquisition by mentioning he was browsing in a pet shop, and how the girl doesn't seem to recognize Zinovy's language at all (as opposed to just not understanding the language), it seems most likely that she was plucked from a 'setting' where such creatures as Zinovy are not present.

Ultimately though, this seems to be a setting where you're supposed to think as little as possible about the setting, is my impression. Otherwise it gets dark and disturbing very quickly, and that does not appear to be the intent of the work.
