I thought "Harlem" was a typo, but it's plastered all over the images so the author clearly wrote it on purpose...am I missing some context? Does the text mention them moving to Manhattan or what?

Nope, it's the author being terrible at English, like a lot of Japanese authors, and assuming that ハーレム is spelled "harlem" in English, rather than "harem". Probably plugged it into something like Google Translate, since Harlem (the place) is pronounced and written the same way in Japanese.
