Mayumi Shinomiya (blue hair) is a modern Yamato Nadeshiko, the game begins on her POV, with the girl describing how great her life is and how thankful she is for it, she has nice rich parents who love her, she is popular and scores all the good grades in school; Mayumi is truly a nice person but due her sheltered lifestyle she is naïve and ignorant of the bad the things in the world, she wants to meet her prince.

At school Mayumi greets Aiko Honjou (short hair), Aiko is Mayumi’s best friend, she is a Middle-Class Family girl, Aiko is more of a sporty and energetic girl with not many overly feminine mannerisms, so even if she has great looks Aiko is not as popular nor looked upon as Mayumi; at any case they are great friends who want to fall in love like many High School girls aim to.

Aiko being more assertive and not a sheltered rich girl, is the one who finds and arranges two guys for her and Mayumi to try out and see if they are fated ones; Mayumi is introduced to Ryouhei (smug dude) and Aiko sticks to Yuuta (muscle dude).

Ryouhei is a modern concept of popular, but somewhat morally loose, guys in Japan, commonly referred to a “Chara Otoko” or “Charao”, known to be girl hunters, basically a male division of Gyaru (although there are actual male Gyaru around), he has a sweet talk and can easily act as the prince a girl wants, Aiko matches him to Mayumi.

Yuuta is a rough guy, athletic and brash, he is Ryouhei’s buddy, and simple as he is Aiko sticks up with him.

Both guys are quick on their charming techniques and manage to deflower Mayumi and Aiko right away, for those innocent girls to fall on their lap was a one-way trip to their doom; Ryouhei and Yuuta are revealed to be connected to pretty much ever dark corner of society, prostitution, slave trading and drug trafficking, they introduce the pure girls to every single one of their practices.

Mayumi and Aiko’s lives take a 180º turn and their friendship is damaged, Aiko secretly harbored some jealousy of Mayumi’s “perfection” as a girl and wanted to be seen as more feminine by others too (if anyone has ever played Persona 4, think of Chie’s dark thoughts that gave birth to her Shadow), however unlike the P4 example in which they got over that and their friendship got stronger, as they get corrupted further and further Mayumi and Aiko drift permanently apart.
