I don't think we're "supposed" to sympathize with the guy - he only seems sympathetic because he's the viewpoint character, and if you make the girl the viewpoint character the story doesn't really work since it's basically "what's WITH this girl??" You can just as easily look at it as the guy reaping what he sows, and hugging a girl while she sleeps and feeling bad for her because she's bruised up can't change the fact that his way of life is twisted and cruel, a realization he finally makes and has to live with.
