webm is a video container, gif is an image format. That's like comparing a train with a car. The only real alternative to gif till this day is apng and even that's not without its problems.

What matters is that webm can display the same animations with significantly better resolution, loading speed and reduced file size. There are several "image" sites like boorus and 4chan that have already adopted them, anyway. If you wanna call them trains, then I say let's get on the train.
