The story is basically about a village who still have the tradition of "yobai" and "fude-oroshi." In English terms the village has no practice of "monogamy."

This, in social terms, was not uncommon up until turn of the 20th-century, where many villages had a Group marriage system (in Japan). The old saying was "the girls and the inheritance belongs to the young" and what this meant was every capable young-men had a chance to have sex and be "mature," and girls had chance to bear children.
