a) Asian culture 101
It's considered very very bad for a divorce to happen. Unlike western culture where divorces are handled with MUCH less consequence. Essentially you lose all public face/honor/value (etc etc) and become a good topic of local gossip (why was there a divorce?!?! CANNOT COMPUTE). If she can keep a secret and no one finds out, it's arguably better than her getting a divorce.

a) Yeah. I also hear divorce is nowhere near as financially beneficial in Japan as it is in the US, especially if you're a woman. No such thing as alimony or division of assets, just child support, if kids are involved. As far as I know, it's like, stay married to a guy you don't like, maybe pop out a couple of kids, put on a veneer of a happy family but have your affairs, and you're set for life. For a woman who doesn't like the guy anymore, or even if she never did, but doesn't want to work or has no real employable skills, it's a good deal that is much more preferable to just receiving a relatively small lump sum to go away. On the other hand, if you're a divorced father who loves his kids, you might be SOL, since courts favor the mother and visitation or partial custody rights are voluntary.

In japan it is completely normal for a man to marry a woman and then never have sex with her (these men usually get prostitutes or pick up women on the street) so a lot of wives feel neglected. Love and sex are handled differently in japan, they CAN be associated with eachother but they can easily co-exist by themselves. Here in the western world we make a huge ruckus when a husband cheats on his wife, yet a divorce is completely acceptable for us so aren't WE actually the ones that are to be considered "weird"?
