As for cloning/redrawing like on the bottom of pg 37, just use Photoshop's Content Aware Fill. It won't be perfect, but it's fast. It'll take you like 15 seconds. Here's an example:

Select area, shift-F5, unselect areas you like, repeat. Once you get it more manageable, go in with the clone tool to clone the pattern, and then pen tool + stroke path to draw the outline.

your view of editing is extremely simplistic. good font = good editing is pretty rich coming from someone who can't even center text in his bubbles.

Of course a good font does make stuff look better, but there's so much else, so much apparently that even you miss it - in my humble opinion you are not one to give advice on stuff like this.
