The plot is so lazy, somehow the boss hacked the chick/guy line and pretended to be her boyfriend, how come she never once picked how he only texted her for sex stuff for the whole period, tried the call my dude or go check on him on the weekends is lost on me. From the point of view of her ex-boyfriend she ghosted him for weeks or months.

The explanation was that someone on the BF's baseball team got into trouble, and, as punishment, the whole team had been banned from having phone conversations for unspecified period.
(This is, of course, made up by the fat bastard)
I mean you can argue that it's still a lame plot device, but it is what it is.
