For scanning, it is best to have a second copy. Typically for small doujinshi, you break the spine, which allows for each page to be scanned flat. Or remove the staples, if that is how it is held together.

@Dracon that's a really old way to approach this... Current digital cameras have resolutions well in excess of what you need to scanning books and magazines. So what you should do, is make photos of the pages with a decent camera. This way you just need to open it to like 90°, no need to unbind or break spine. You still need to keep it flat and with even lighting (or correct it by using white page as the input.

Either way, you can do it with high quality non destructively.
