Few colleagues of mine have traveled to Japan before and they said pretty much just that. They're apparently *welcoming* and nice, but if you aren't distinctly Japanese, you're going to be kept, more or less, at arm's length.

Unlike Western, historically, Eastern Asia has a few black people living here first. It is not a strange thing a few people still have no understanding or sympathize with black skin cosplayers. They prefer brighter-skin cosplayers in the end since they "think" they are cuter. (Yes, their taste, maybe not necessarily your taste.)

Meanwhile, in Japan, ganguro (tan skin makeup girl) is also a subculture. Now, do you think it is a problem with skin?

Skepticism is the point, which comes from a bad experience. They fear habits from foreign travelers, expatriates, or laborers would make a problem for them. (And not yet counting on wrong conveying from their mass media.)

Respecting (people's rights, properties, or paces) is one of the common cultures in Japan, which many foreigners seem to forgo and have a hard time.

Should understand why they said before criticizing them, especially people with different tastes, beliefs, or skin colors. This site has many people who always freely give a shit about something they don't like.

Don't make an eternal racism cycle on each other.

I don't think the issue is westerners doing cosplay per se, but just that they tend to be worse at cosplaying the kinds of characters you see here (mostly anime characters).
