Still surprised by this anime/light novel series. Essentially a revenge porn combined with Shield Hero and then cranking up the sadism and fucked up moments into high gear. Ironically, some of the cruel and sadistic elements like the drugging, slavery, and fake personas of 'heroes' have some realism with regards to the world that is being presented. Even real life history has such aspects, even when we don't want to remember/think upon them.

Even more shocking is that this wasn't a full-on hentai. Revenge rape isn't uncommon in hentai anime and I could see this as a trial test for potential hentai 'seasons'. Where some hentai stories could translate from visual novels and eroge games to full-on anime seasons (12 episode format). [Most common examples for hentai that could be given this treatment: Taimanin Asagi franchise, Kuroinu, Bible Black, etc.)

Whether that would've been financially viable is another thing, but there's no doubt that Redo of Healer has left its impact.

Just finished the anime myself, both fascinated and a little disappointed. I was fully on board for the whole thing to resemble episodes 1 and 2: setup for an outburst of sexual violence and sadism, then that outburst, then back to setup for the next one. Giving the audience a chance to breath a bit in between the action, like a good horror flick. Ironically, I think Redo's first two episodes do the revenge rape thing better than most revenge rape hentai does.

Sadly though, 1 and 2 are by far the most intense the series gets in terms of SEXUAL violence. After that it gradually transforms into something like a harem anime, if the protagonist of said harem anime was a psychotic mega-chad instead of the dickless waste of flesh most of them are. There's still plenty of violence in the rest of the series, and the overall story is unsettlingly fitting for the times we're currently living in, even as cartoonish as it is, but it's a lot more generic and less in line with an actual hentai/ero anime. After 2 in fact, I don't thing our protag even rapes anyone else directly; it's all out-sourced.

Agreed though, this is an odd one in terms of identity. Anime series have been leaning more and more into the porn angle to sell blu rays, but at some point you cross a line and become actual porn (with a story) instead of anime with a lot of fanservice. I'm fascinated to see the day when we get an actual, honest-to-goodness 12 episode hentai. Redo isn't QUITE that yet, but it's only inches away.

After watching redo I was immediately reminded of sofcore hentai we saw back in the early/late 90’s. we’ve pretty much come to the point where if the creme lemon series was created in this day and age it would be the equivalent of what we see in redo only with little to no rape.
