Some information:
1 - Galleries with some tags (guro and scat) should give you a warning before you even see anything, if they don't you disabled it
2 - There is a function called tag flagging, although you have to "buy" it (on Hath Perks)
3 - You can block uploaders who mainly upload stuff you don't like (on profile settings)
4 - With this script (https://viid.me/9MwbN) you can see the tags on a gallery when hovering it on the front page (needs an user script addon/extension like tampermonkey/greasemonkey)

There is a script which hides the galleries with the tags you choose, I don't remember where it is though.
With the tag flagging option you can tell it to hide the covers of galleries with the tags you choose, this, blocking the uploader and the '-unwanted_tag$' when searching (needs at least 1 positive tag) are the options aside from scripts

How about a way to blacklist certain tags?

Just put a - in front of tags you don't want to see in the search. Sadly, only a limited amount of tags can be listed at once.
