They are animated PNGs you have to open them in Firefox 3.0 or something that can play APNGs. There was some trouble I was having with uploading gifs at the time

Opera 9.5+, Firefox 3.0+, and Sea Monkey 2.0+ can play APNGs "out of the box."
Google Chrome can play APNGs with an add-on.

Also most viewers do not support APNGs. Some exeptions are Imagine, XnView, and KSquirrel. Also GIMP and Paint.NET with plug-ins.

Why are the images dithered to so few colors? Animated PNG can support truecolor images, so there was no technical reason to do so. I doubt it helped it compress better.
